Is the 2G closure leaving you with nowhere to go?
By Mark Schneider

If your business relies on tracking technology then you’ve probably received notification from your technology provider that the 2G network is about to close in the next few months and you’ll need a new contract with upgraded equipment. And if you haven’t heard it yet, then it’s only a matter of time until you do.

So what’s going on? Well cellular networks around the world are shutting down their 2G networks and Australia is no exception. Many tracking devices still rely on the network and they’ll stop working when it shuts down. Telstra is closing its network on December 1, with Optus switching theirs off on April 1.

2G is old technology now, dating back to the early days of mobile phones. It’s been well and truly superseded by 3G and 4G systems.

If you weren’t aware of the impending shutdown the news may have come as a bit of an unpleasant surprise, especially when you’re confronted by the prospect of an expensive upgrade to new telematics equipment.

Well, before you resign yourself to signing up to an expensive new contract why not do yourself a favour by contacting Fleet Dynamics to discuss some money-saving options? We may even have some good news for you that means you can put off that decision about switching to new technology for a little while yet.

The extended 2G option

While the 2G network’s days on Telstra and Optus are definitely numbered, with Vodafone it’s a slightly different story. While they, too, will inevitably close their 2G network eventually, it’s going to be working for some time yet. That could be very good news indeed if you’re busy with other things and upgrading your tracking technology is something you just don’t want to know about right now.

If your equipment is compatible with Fleetdynamics’ software then we can seamlessly switch you over to our system with a minimum of fuss by using the Vodafone network.

Affordable new tracking options

However, even if your existing technology isn’t compatible and you need to upgrade to the latest tracking solutions, then it makes sense to speak to us here at Fleetdynamics. With a range of fleet tracking products and services that perfectly meet your needs, Fleetdynamics can offer you a better price on a new 3G solution than your current provider.
